Redang - snorkels and song

Our beachfront

So the snorkelling at Redang was amazing.  I went out three times to different spots with other tourists and our very friendly guides, who dubbed me ‘Australia Girl’ and shamelessly flirted.  I have no idea what all the different types of fish were, but they were many and varied.  I did identify the parrot fish, and how could you not?  Their iridescent blue/pink scales were so enchanting.  I just floated there watching them nibble on coral, while schools of other small stripey fish swam around me.  I also saw a huge moray eel, but I didn’t stay too long looking at his freaky face.

I bought some disposable underwater cameras, but I have to wait for the photos to be developed when I get home.  How long has it been since I had a roll of film developed?!  Well if any of the snorkelling pics are decent, I’ll put them up here.

Nick and I became semi regulars at the big resort at the other end of the beach. They had wifi and cold beer.  Eventually we convinced Dad and Janice to come down as well, and we played cards each night while drinking cocktails and listening to the Tequila Sunrise Band.  I so wish I had a video camera to tape them.  At first, they were just kind of cheesy background noise.  But by the third night, we realised that the male of the trio, especially, absolutely loved hamming it up.  They had these little ridiculous choreographed dances and their crowning achievement was singing a cover of Hotel California, only changing the chorus lyrics to fit the resort’s name ("Welcome to the Hotel Redang Laguna...such a lovely place...such a lovely place").  I couldn’t decide whether they actually knew what Hotel California was about, but even if you take the lyrics at their most superficial level, singing about a luxury resort that you can check out of but never leave while standing in same resort was hilarious all the same.  Maybe it was a subtle cry for help.

(This achievement was narrowly followed in hilarity stakes by the two female singers doing a cover of Technotronic’s Pump up the Jam.  You haven’t lived til you’ve heard two Phillippina lounge singers doing 90s hip hop/techno on a tropical island.)

    what's it all about?

I'm a Christian. I get absorbed in lots of different pursuits, and my attention frequently gets snagged on whatever latest shiny thing pops into my view. I write, I sing, I design, I read, I edit, I make things, I play WoW, I play piano, I try and record music. And I struggle with depression. This blog is about all these things. And probably other things as well.
